Each year UBC hires 12-15 monitors for the Explore Programs. We first rehire monitors who have prior successful experience working in our program at UBC. On occasion, we also hire students who have taken an Explore program at UBC and who are bilingual. Other monitors who are hired are UBC students who are fully bilingual and who are familiar with the French community in Vancouver. As UBC offers both French and English programs concurrently in the Spring session, monitors during that program must be bilingual and able to communicate with all students in the language they are learning and must have the skills to help them with their language challenges. Except for former Explore participants who took the program at UBC, monitors are always recruited locally.
French Program instructors Instructors are always recruited locally. If you live in Vancouver, have experience teaching French at the university level and are available in May and June, you can email your curriculum vitae to french.centre@ubc.ca. If your candidature looks like a possible fit, we will contact you for an interview.
english program instructors
English instructors in the Explore Programs at UBC have diverse teaching backgrounds and a well-developed knowledge of Canadian and West Coast cultures. Most of our instructors have taught English overseas or at the post-secondary level. They are excited about the English language and about working in an immersion environment. Since the vast majority of our students are of French-Canadian origin, instructors often appreciate the experience of working with native Canadians in a rare second-language learning context.
Teaching in the Explore Programs is a demanding full-time activity. A good knowledge of local resources is necessary. UBC uses a team-teaching thematic approach to language teaching. The main goal of the program is to develop oral communication skills and cultural awareness.
As one of the goals of the program is to explore the similarities and differences between English and French Canada, an intermediate level of French and familiarity with "la Belle Province" is definitely an asset.
If you think you might be a great fit for this program, feel free to peruse the English Language Institute website and to submit your application as indicated (ELI) with a copy to french.centre@ubc.ca..
