Explore Program in French

EXPLORE, THE SUMMER LANGUAGE BURSARY PROGRAM
THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

OBJECTIVES OF THE FRENCH PROGRAM

1. to create a total immersion atmosphere;
2. to use only French in teaching and conversation;
3. to teach the fundamental structures of the French language so that students
are able to begin to think in French;
4. to develop a useful and varied vocabulary in order to enable students
to better express themselves orally in French;
5. to develop written language skills;
6. to explore the similarities and differences between French and English;
7. to discuss differing points of view regarding economic, social, political and
cultural matters between French- and English-speaking people in Canada;
8. to establish a better understanding of French minorities outside Quebec;
9. to establish a better understanding of minorities within Canada.

CONTACT HOURS

Students have up to seven hours of classes/seminars a day taught by up to four instructors. This generally includes three hours in the morning, five mornings a week; two hours in the afternoon, four afternoons a week; and two hours in the evenings, two evenings a week, for five weeks. More than 100 hours are spent in classes and workshops, with a total of more than 120 contact hours when compulsory socio-cultural activities are included.

CERTIFICATE

UBC does not give credit for this course. However, students will receive a certificate at the end of the program indicating the time period involved and the level attained. A file will be kept for each student containing records of marks, attendance, participation, etc. The certificate together with this file may enable you to obtain credits from institutions other than UBC. A photocopy of your file will be sent to any institution requesting it.

PLEASE NOTE

French immersion is only possible with your cooperation. In residence, in class and during socio-cultural activities, everything is set up to make French the only language you need. Students who persist nevertheless in speaking English and who are not willing to put the necessary effort into speaking French will be given a warning; if they still do not demonstrate an interest in the immersion experience, they will be asked to leave the program. A sincere effort to speak French at all times is essential to maintain the French immersion atmosphere in the program.
